What
is Hapkido?
The word Hapkido can be broadly translated as “THE WAY OF
COORDINATED POWER.” Practicing Hapkido teaches one to
coordinate and unify the mind and body. It is both an art of
self-defense and a way of life.
The practice of Hapkido involves empty hand and weapons
techniques. Each category is divided into offensive and
defensive techniques, and each of these is further divided into
striking, joint locking and throwing. Within the joint locking
techniques, twisting, throwing, paralyzing and strangulation are
included. Within the striking techniques are punching, kicking,
cutting and stabbing. Techniques with weapons include the use of
a dagger, sword, club, cane, staff, spear, fan, rope and stone
throwing.
Hapkido is especially powerful because the weakest part of the
opponent's body is attacked with a stronger means, namely
attacking the arteries, veins, nerves and organs, thereby
altering the opponent to your advantage.

Principles
There are Three Major Principles in Hapkido:
1. Water, softness, adaptability, strength, conformity,
patience.
2. Circle force, rather than being met with force, is led in a
circular manner to minimize its effect and then is redirected
upon the opponent.
3. Harmony between mind, body, techniques and environment.
