The spirit of mutual respect is vital to martial arts training. So important is this idea that the first technique taught is the bow showing respect. The bow is the physical expression of the most important principles of Hapkido.
These principles are:
• That we trust one another
• That we value one another
• That we have good will for one another
When we bow to one another, mind and body are united in action. Such unity is essential for developing skill in any of the martial arts. Oriental philosophy teaches us that outward displays of respect is not a sign of weakness, rather they are a sign of strength. Showing respect for others is the first step in creating a positive way of life for yourself. When you respect others you encourage them to respect you, too.
SHOW RESPECT TO THE FLAGS
At the beginning and end of every class, the entire class will bow together - either a standing or a kneeling bow - toward the flags of the United States and Korea.
SHOW RESPECT TO THE MASTER
Always show respect to the Master in the dojang or out in public.
SHOW RESPECT TO OTHER STUDENTS
It is proper to bow to other students when greeting or saying goodbye. Bow to senior students first.
CONCENTRATION AND ATTITUDE
To achieve maximum mental and physical benefits from martial arts training, it is important to concentrate and practice with the proper attitude.
Only you can make yourself capable of learning. Before coming to practice, take time to calm down. Try to arrive early, so that you are not rushed.
When you arrive at school, pause before entering. Try to relax and concentrate. Cast off stress and worries about personal problems - along with your shoes - before entering the dojang.
Before class begins, do warm ups and slow stretching on your own. Also, be sure to:
• Clear your mind.
• Be calm.
• Relax.
• Concentrate on preparing yourself for martial arts training.
